City Palace Grand Entrance
Warm honey and amber wash across the grand entrance of City Palace, caught here from within the courtyard looking outward toward a wide Rajasthani sky. A row of sweeping arches draws the eye straight through to the bright daylight beyond, their curves repeated and layered in a rhythm that feels both monumental and welcoming. To the right, tiered balconies and ornately crowned pavilions rise above the roofline, their warm stone glowing against a vivid cerulean blue. A full-canopied tree pushes upward between the structures, its deep green a lively contrast to all that golden architecture. Tiny figures visible beneath the arches give a sense of the scale — this entrance is genuinely vast.
The history & when to go
City Palace in Udaipur is one of the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan, built and expanded over several centuries by the rulers of the Mewar dynasty beginning in the sixteenth century. It served as the seat of Mewar royalty for generations and remains partly a royal residence today, with significant portions open to the public as a museum. The complex reflects a layering of architectural styles accumulated across successive rulers, unified by the warm local stone and the distinctive vocabulary of Rajput craftsmanship.
The morning hours bring the richest golden light to this grand entrance, making it the ideal time to experience the scene in person.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Udaipur finds a home on your wall.
