About the view

Ik Kil Cenote Underground Pool

The view is taken from water level, looking upward and outward toward the open sky above Ik Kil Cenote near Chichén Itzá. The composition is anchored by the glowing turquoise pool in the foreground, its surface alive with rippling light — pale aqua at the center where sunlight strikes directly, deepening to teal and jade toward the shadowed edges. Long, dark roots cascade from the opening far above like curtains, framing a column of warm golden light that pours down through the circular mouth of the cenote. The surrounding walls are draped in lush green ferns and trailing vines, while a single bright leaf floats on the still surface below, catching the glow. The whole scene pulses between shadow and radiance, dark and luminous, enclosed and infinite.

The history

Ik Kil is one of the most celebrated cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula, located near the ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá. Sacred to the Maya, cenotes like this one were considered portals to the underworld and were used for ritual offerings. Ik Kil's nearly circular opening and dramatic depth have made it a site of cultural and archaeological significance, drawing researchers and visitors for decades.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tulum finds a home on your wall.
