About the view

El Cabo San Juan Beach

The scene looks out over El Cabo San Juan from a slight elevation, taking in the full sweep of the bay. Warm boulders rise straight from the shallows — some clustered alone in open water, others stacked into a rocky promontory on the left where a small thatched shelter perches above the surf. The crescent of pale sand curves away to the right, edged by tall palms leaning gently toward the sea. The water moves through every shade the Caribbean offers: deep cobalt at the edges, shifting through vivid turquoise, settling into luminous jade near the shore. Bright midday light floods the scene, and jungle-covered hills carry their saturated green all the way to a cloudless sky.

The history & when to go

El Cabo San Juan sits within Tayrona National Park, which Colombia established as a protected area in 1964. The park occupies land long inhabited by the Tayrona people, and their descendants — including the Kogui and Wiwa communities — continue to regard these mountains and shores as sacred. Because access is limited to a trail through dense forest, the beach has remained remarkably unspoiled, and that sense of hard-won arrival is part of what makes it so beloved.

The dry season, roughly December through March, brings calm seas and clear skies — the best conditions for seeing this bay at its most brilliant.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tayrona National Park finds a home on your wall.
