About the view

Taos Mountain Cottonwood Autumn

The view opens low across the high desert mesa, looking out toward Taos Mountain from somewhere in the broad valley below. Tall, wide-canopied trees blaze in full autumn gold at the center of the composition, their crowns so saturated they seem to hold their own light against the deep violet-blue of the mountain range beyond. Darker, evergreen shapes anchor the mid-ground on either side, making the golden trees burn even brighter by contrast. In the foreground, a silvery-gold carpet of low scrub stretches across the canvas, catching the same warm afternoon light. The sky above the peaks is pale celadon edged with amber clouds, and the whole scene radiates that particular clarity of high-desert air in October.

The history & when to go

Taos Mountain, sacred to the Taos Pueblo people, rises to well over twelve thousand feet and has been a defining presence in this valley for centuries. The Taos Pueblo itself, continuously inhabited for over a thousand years, sits at the mountain's base and holds the peak as a place of deep spiritual significance. The mountain's silhouette — broad-shouldered and commanding — has also been central to the artistic identity of the region since the Taos Society of Artists first gathered here in the early twentieth century.

The golden display typically peaks in mid-to-late October, and the clearest views across the mesa come in the calm hours of late afternoon, when the low sun turns everything to copper.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taos finds a home on your wall.
