About the view

Old Town Red Roofs

From a high vantage point above Tallinn's Old Town, the view sweeps across a sea of vivid red rooftops broken by bursts of deep green canopy. Warm yellows and soft ochres color the lower buildings along the winding lanes, while a cluster of round-topped towers with conical red caps anchors the left side of the composition. At the center, a slender dark spire climbs toward a wide Baltic sky — soft blues and drifting cloud shapes that carry the eye all the way to a pale glimmer of water at the horizon. The light feels overcast yet luminous, lending every color a saturated, almost jewel-like intensity.

The history & when to go

Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Northern Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Its two distinct historic districts — the upper Toompea hill, long the seat of ruling powers, and the lower merchant town below — developed largely between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, shaped by Danish, German, and Swedish influence over the centuries. The fortification walls and towers visible here date to that medieval period and remain largely intact, a rare survival on the continent.

Summer brings the fullest canopy of green and the longest daylight hours, making an elevated viewpoint like Patkuli or Kohtuotsa viewing platform ideal for taking in this panorama in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tallinn finds a home on your wall.
