About the view

Saint Isaacs Cathedral

The view looks up at Saint Isaac's Cathedral from the garden level, where clusters of deep red blooms and vivid green foliage press close to the foreground. The cathedral fills the frame with commanding presence — its warm stone facade rising through a colonnade of rich amber-toned columns toward four smaller gilded towers and, crowning everything, the great golden dome catching full summer light against a sweeping blue sky threaded with pale cloud. The composition pulls the eye upward in layers: from the saturated crimson and emerald of the flowers, through the cathedral's sun-warmed body, to that luminous dome burning against the blue. It is a view of St. Petersburg at its most exuberant.

The history

Saint Isaac's Cathedral was built over four decades in the nineteenth century and was consecrated in 1858. At the time of its completion it was one of the largest domed cathedrals in the world, and it remains among the most recognizable landmarks in Russia. Its interior and exterior were decorated by many of the leading artists and craftspeople of the era, and its colonnade offers one of the most celebrated elevated views across the city's rooftops and waterways.
