About the view

Nasir ol-Molk Mosque Courtyard

The view opens at courtyard level inside the Nasir ol-Molk Mosque in Shiraz, looking directly toward the main iwan — a soaring arched portal flanked by two slender towers and framed by a long colonnade of pointed arches stretching left across the scene. Morning light washes the façade in deep rose and coral, warming the intricate geometric patterns that cover nearly every surface. A long, still reflecting pool runs through the center of the courtyard, its teal-green water mirroring the pink archways and golden towers with almost perfect symmetry. Vivid crimson and magenta blooms line both edges of the pool in dense, low borders, their color so saturated they seem to hum against the cool water. The sky above is pale and luminous, wide open above the roofline.

The history & when to go

Nasir ol-Molk Mosque was completed in the late nineteenth century and is celebrated throughout Iran for the extraordinary stained-glass windows that fill its winter prayer hall, casting pools of colored light across the interior each morning. The mosque remains an active place of worship and is considered one of the finest examples of Persian decorative craft from the Qajar period. Its courtyard, with its symmetrical layout and ornamental tilework, reflects classical Iranian garden principles — order, reflection, and the presence of water at the heart of the design.

Visiting in spring, when flowering plants around the pool are at their most abundant, adds another layer of color to a scene that is already uncommonly vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Shiraz finds a home on your wall.
