About the view

Savannah Historic District Street

The view pulls you straight down a warm terracotta-toned path that curves gently toward a row of grand antebellum homes in Savannah's Historic District. The house anchoring the right side rises in deep brick-red with crisp white columns and dark shuttered windows, its staircase stepping down to meet the walkway. To the left, great moss-draped trees arch overhead, filtering the midday light into soft, luminous patches of gold and green. Masses of vivid pink blooms crowd the border where path meets garden, their color almost startling against the shadowed trunks behind them. The sky above is a bright, open blue, and the whole composition breathes with the particular warmth of a Southern spring morning just before the heat settles in.

The history & when to go

Savannah's Historic District is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, covering about two square miles of the city's original layout. That grid of streets and public squares was designed by James Oglethorpe when he founded the Georgia colony in 1733, and much of it survives remarkably intact. The antebellum townhouses that line these streets were built largely in the nineteenth century and reflect a range of architectural styles that took root as the city grew into a prosperous port.

Spring is the finest time to experience this scene in person, when the blooms are at their peak and the low-angled morning light turns every brick path into something worth lingering over.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Savannah finds a home on your wall.
