About the view

Colonial Church Ocean View

From a hilltop vantage point, a grand colonial church rises above a dense canopy of tall palms and lush tropical green, its warm cream facade crowned by two gilded domed towers that glow in the full afternoon light. Terracotta rooftops peek through the treetops below, and the church's deep blue doorway anchors the composition at center. Beyond it all, the Atlantic stretches across the upper half of the scene in sweeping bands of teal and cobalt, pressing right to the horizon. The colors are vivid and saturated — rust earth, luminous gold, deep green, brilliant blue — layered in the loose, luminous way that makes Olinda's hillside feel both ancient and alive.

The history & when to go

Olinda, the historic town that borders Recife, was founded in the sixteenth century and grew into one of the most important colonial settlements in Portuguese Brazil. Its hilltop churches, monasteries, and convents were built during the height of the sugar trade era and survive today as some of the finest examples of baroque religious architecture in the Americas. UNESCO recognized the entire historic center as a World Heritage Site in 1982, honoring its exceptional concentration of well-preserved colonial buildings set within a still-inhabited urban landscape.

The late morning hours bring the most dramatic contrast between the warm tones of the architecture and the deep blue of the sea beyond — worth the climb for the view alone.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Recife finds a home on your wall.
