About the view

Kawarau River Canyon Bridge

The view drops straight into the gorge, looking upstream toward the Kawarau River as it churns through a narrow canyon carved between steep, scrub-covered walls. That water is an almost impossible shade of turquoise — glacial and electric, swirling into white where it quickens around exposed rock — and it draws the eye straight to the slim arc of the bridge spanning the cliffs above. The canyon walls rise in layers of grey and amber, softened on the left bank by a tumble of lush green growth and tall, loose-limbed trees catching the warm afternoon light. Beyond the bridge, the hills open into tawny slopes that fade upward into rusted red peaks beneath a pale sky. The whole composition pulls you forward, as though you are about to round a bend in the river yourself.

The history & when to go

The Kawarau River flows east from Lake Wakatipu through one of the South Island's most dramatic gorges before joining the Clutha River, New Zealand's highest-volume river by flow. The bridge crossing the gorge became famous worldwide as the site where commercial bungee jumping was first established, opened by A.J. Hackett and Henry van Asch in 1988. That launch transformed Queenstown's identity and made the Kawarau Bridge a landmark in the history of adventure tourism.

The gorge light is at its richest in autumn, when the surrounding hills shift to gold and the river's turquoise color deepens against the cooling air.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Queenstown finds a home on your wall.
