About the view

Pärnu Orthodox Church

The view looks up at Pärnu Orthodox Church from ground level on a clear, still day, the church filling the frame with a confidence that feels almost weightless against the deep cobalt sky. Clusters of dark teal onion domes rise in layers, their verdigris curves catching the full strength of Baltic sunlight and glowing against the cream and blush warm stone of the walls below. Gold crosses tip each dome, tiny points of brightness that pull the eye upward through the composition. To the left, a separate bell tower echoes the same palette — soft ivory, arched openings, a single teal cap — while neatly trimmed shrubs line the base and a broad leafy canopy softens the left edge of the scene. The light falls hard and honest, casting clean shadows across the arched windows and lending the whole building a sculptural solidity.

The history & when to go

The church was built in the early twentieth century to serve the Orthodox community that had settled in Pärnu, and it remains an active parish today. Its multi-domed silhouette reflects the Russian Revival architectural style that spread through the Baltic provinces during the imperial period, making it a rare and recognizable landmark in a city whose character is otherwise shaped largely by Scandinavian and German influences.

Summer mornings, when the low northern sun strikes the domes from the east, bring out the richest contrast between the warm walls and the gleaming teal curves above them.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Pärnu finds a home on your wall.
