About the view

Bourtzi Castle Island Fortress

Bourtzi Castle rises from the middle of the Argolic Gulf as though the water simply decided, one evening, to hold something ancient and glowing. The scene is caught at dusk, from somewhere along the Nafplio waterfront looking out across the bay, and the fortress burns with deep amber and gold against a sky that grades from soft peach at the horizon up through blush rose and into the palest violet. Layered blue-grey mountains recede behind the walls, their gentle silhouettes anchoring the composition and throwing the warm stone of the fortress into vivid relief. Below, the perfectly still water doubles everything — the towers, the amber glow, the mountains — so that the scene feels suspended between two worlds, the real and its reflection.

The history & when to go

Bourtzi has guarded the entrance to Nafplio's harbor since the Venetians built the original fortification in the fifteenth century. The structure passed through Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek hands over the following centuries, and during the period of Greek independence it served at various points as a military installation and later as a place of detention. It stands on a small islet in the middle of the harbour, reachable only by boat, and remains one of the most immediately recognizable landmarks of the Peloponnese.

The golden light seen here mirrors what the fortress actually looks like in the hour after sunset.

Nafplio Dusk Calm Every Morning – Bourtzi Castle Island Fortress Nafplio · Gallery Canvas

Rising golden from a mirror-still harbor, the island fortress of Bourtzi glows amber against the violet mountains of Nafplio at dusk, its ancient walls perfectly doubled in the rose-washed water below. This watercolor print of Bourtzi in Nafplio renders that warm ochre light and soft pink sky in a mood that is quietly timeless and deeply serene.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Nafplio finds a home on your wall.
