About the view

Na Pali Coastal Cliffs

The view looks down along the Na Pali Coast from high above, as though caught from a hovering vantage point just off the ridge tops. Massive pleated cliffs fill the right side of the composition, their faces streaked in deep forest green, amber, and shadow-dark brown where the folds crease into shade. Below, a crescent of pale sand catches the light between two headlands, and beyond it the water shifts from pale aquamarine near the shore to a saturated turquoise that deepens toward the horizon. Wispy clouds drift across a soft blue sky at the upper left, offering the only gentle note in an otherwise commanding scene.

The history & when to go

The Na Pali Coast has been shaped over millions of years by volcanic forces and relentless erosion, leaving a series of valleys and ridges that drop sharply to the sea. The cliffs, some rising up to four thousand feet, have sheltered some of the most remote valleys in the Hawaiian Islands, where evidence of early Polynesian settlement has been found. The coastline became protected land in 1983 with the establishment of the Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, preserving roughly seventeen miles of shoreline from development.

The aerial perspective captured here is at its most vivid on a clear morning in the drier summer months, when low humidity sharpens every ridge line and the ocean runs its most electric shade of blue.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Na Pali Coast finds a home on your wall.
