About the view

Merzouga Erg Chebbi Dunes

The view stretches low across the great dune sea of Erg Chebbi, as though the observer is standing almost at sand level, looking toward a sweeping ridge that fills the upper half of the scene. Late afternoon light rakes across the faces of each dune in Merzouga, burning them a deep terracotta and burnt sienna while the sheltered valleys between fall into rich mahogany shadow. The crests catch the last warmth of the day in soft amber, and the sky above dissolves into a pale, almost-white cream — a quiet exhale above all that heat and color. Every curve flows into the next, the composition moving like a slow wave from the foreground hollows up to the sharp ridgeline in the distance.

The history & when to go

Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco's two major natural ergs, a vast field of wind-sculpted dunes that extends roughly 28 kilometers in length and up to 7 kilometers in width along the Algerian border. The region has drawn Saharan trade caravans, nomadic Berber communities and travelers for centuries, and it remains a living landscape shaped by the same seasonal winds that have moved the sands for millennia. The dunes are not fixed; they migrate slowly and continuously, making the erg a place that is genuinely different with each visit.

The deep copper tones seen here are truest in the hour before sunset, when low-angled light draws every ripple into sharp relief.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Merzouga finds a home on your wall.
