About the view

Guatapé Street Umbrella Alley

The view looks straight down the length of Guatapé's famous umbrella alley, the narrow lane receding toward a bright vanishing point with figures strolling unhurried in the midday light. Above them, dozens of open umbrellas hang suspended in overlapping layers — deep violet, hot pink, electric teal, and sky blue — forming a canopy so dense it almost replaces the sky. Below, the buildings press close on both sides, their facades washed in bold blocks of tangerine, turquoise, and lime, trimmed with candy-colored doors and decorative panels. Dappled light filters through the gaps between the umbrellas, casting the warm paving below in shifting patches of shadow and sun. The composition pulls the eye forward and upward at once, holding you between the street's human scale and the carnival of color overhead.

The history

Guatapé is a municipality in the Antioquia department of Colombia, known across the country for its tradition of decorating building plinths — the lower exterior panels of facades — with colorful sculpted scenes depicting local life, animals, and landscapes. This practice, deeply embedded in the town's identity, has made Guatapé one of the most photographed destinations in Colombia. The umbrella installation along the street has become a beloved part of visiting Guatapé.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Medellín finds a home on your wall.
