About the view

Notre-Dame de la Garde Marseille

From high above the city, Notre-Dame de la Garde rises at the center of the scene, its pale warm-stone tower crowned by a gilded figure that catches the full force of the Mediterranean sun. The view sweeps down from the basilica's layered terraces and arched facades, past deep green hillside foliage, across the terracotta rooftops of Marseille stretching to every horizon. To the left, the harbor opens wide — a flat cobalt blue that meets distant headlands under a sky of washed cerulean. The light is midday and generous, throwing clean shadows beneath every arch and softening the city below into a warm amber haze.

The history

Notre-Dame de la Garde stands on the highest natural point in Marseille, at roughly 154 meters above sea level. The current basilica was built in the nineteenth century in a Romano-Byzantine style and consecrated in 1864. The gilded statue of the Virgin atop the bell tower stands over eleven meters tall and has long served as a navigational landmark for vessels entering and leaving the port. The basilica holds hundreds of votive offerings — model boats, paintings, plaques — left by sailors and their families as expressions of gratitude across generations.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Marseille finds a home on your wall.
