About the view

Jacaranda Tree Avenue

A long avenue stretches straight to a vanishing point of soft gold light, its path carpeted in fallen violet blooms that blur the line between canopy and ground. On either side, gnarled, reaching limbs arch overhead to form a tunnel of purple so dense it dims the sky to a deep, bruised mauve. To the left, a wall of deep crimson foliage blazes against the cool violet tones, the contrast almost electric. The scene is viewed head-on from street level, pulling the eye deep into the corridor, where the warm trunks twist and lean like dancers frozen mid-movement. This is Jacaranda Tree Avenue in Maputo, rendered in saturated sweeps of lilac, plum, and rose, with just enough amber warmth breaking through the canopy to suggest late-afternoon sun filtering down from beyond the bloom.

The history & when to go

Maputo has been known for its jacaranda-lined streets since the city's development under Portuguese colonial rule in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The trees were planted widely throughout the city's formal avenues as part of planned urban landscaping, and they have since become one of the most recognized and celebrated features of the capital. Each spring, their flowering transforms entire streets into violet corridors that have come to symbolize the city's character.

The blooms typically peak between September and November, when the canopy is fullest and fallen flowers cover the ground in a continuous purple drift.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Maputo finds a home on your wall.
