About the view

Maldives Overwater Bungalows Pier

Framed by a sweep of tall palm fronds overhead, this view looks out across a lagoon so vividly turquoise it seems lit from below. The water shifts through layers of aqua, jade and pale gold where it shallows near the shore, deepening toward a cool, gemstone blue at the horizon. A long pier stretches away from the viewer's feet, drawing the eye toward three thatched overwater bungalows perched above the stillness, their warm-toned roofs the only interruption between water and sky. The light is full and bright, softened just enough to give the whole scene a dreamy, suspended quality.

The history & when to go

Overwater bungalows have become the defining image of the Maldives, and their story is a relatively recent one. The style of accommodation was pioneered in the region during the 1980s, when the country had already begun welcoming international visitors. The concept places guests directly above the lagoon, connected to the island only by a pier, so that the ocean becomes an extension of the room itself. Today the Maldives is home to some of the most celebrated overwater retreats in the world, drawing travelers from every continent seeking that particular quiet.

Early morning, before the midday sun bleaches the sky, is when the lagoon colors are richest and the light falls at its most golden angle across the water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Maldives finds a home on your wall.
