About the view

Bluenose II Lunenburg Harbour

A dark-hulled two-masted schooner cuts across the foreground of Lunenburg Harbour, her great white sails billowing full against a cobalt summer sky scattered with soft, rounded clouds. The view is taken from the water, looking back toward the shoreline, where the famous waterfront row of red, yellow, and blue clapboard buildings sits low along the hill — vivid and compact, their reflections just catching in the deep teal of the harbour below. Light falls clean and bright, the kind of midday clarity that makes every colour pop: the stark white of the canvas sails, the dark sweep of the hull trailing a pale wake, the green-furred hillside rising behind the town. The composition places the schooner slightly right of centre, giving the scene a sense of forward motion and open water.

The history & when to go

The vessel depicted is Bluenose II, the replica of the celebrated fishing and racing schooner Bluenose, which became one of Canada's most recognised symbols after the original dominated the International Fishermen's Trophy races throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The original Bluenose was launched in Lunenburg in 1921 and remained undefeated in every Trophy series throughout her racing career. Bluenose II was built in Lunenburg in 1963 to the same plans as her predecessor and has served as a provincial ambassador since 1971, appearing on the Canadian dime.

Summer is the finest season to catch Bluenose II under full sail in the harbour, when she runs regular passenger tours out of the Lunenburg waterfront.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lunenburg finds a home on your wall.
