About the view

Kuang Si Waterfall Pools

A curtain of white water spills from a tall, moss-covered wall of pale rock at Kuang Si Waterfall, viewed from the edge of its lowest and widest pool. The perspective is low and intimate, as though you are kneeling at the water's lip. That foreground pool is an extraordinary flat expanse of turquoise — cool, glassy, almost luminous — and it anchors the whole composition before the eye travels upward through a cascade of smaller terraced falls, each one a froth of white against pale stone. Lush canopy crowds every edge, a dense layering of deep forest green, lime, and gold where midday light breaks through the trees and catches the mist rising off the falls. The result is a scene that moves from stillness to motion and back again, the water's energy somehow made serene by all that surrounding green.

The history & when to go

Kuang Si Falls lies about 29 kilometres south of Luang Prabang and is one of the most celebrated natural sites in Laos. The falls drop in stages over tiered formations that have built up gradually as mineral-rich water deposits layers of sediment over time, creating the shallow, terraced pools the site is known for. A protected area surrounds the falls, and a rescue centre for Asiatic black bears operates near the entrance.

The pools are most dramatic between November and February, when the rainy season has passed and the water runs full and vivid without heavy cloud cover dimming that signature turquoise.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Luang Prabang finds a home on your wall.
