About the view

Lombok Beach Cattle Scene

A rust-colored young cow stands at the center of the scene, gazing out from between lush, low-growing coastal shrubs with an almost proprietorial calm. The view opens behind it across a sweep of pale sandy shore and shallow turquoise water, the bay catching the full brightness of a midday tropical sky. Rolling green hills, golden at their crests where the sun bleaches the grass, curve along the horizon, while a shaded open-air shelter and a scattering of vivid blue canopies add small dashes of color to the middle distance. The light is generous and even, pressing warm amber into the animal's coat and brilliant emerald into every leaf.

The history & when to go

Lombok's coastline has long supported a way of life built around the sea and the land in equal measure. The island's beaches, particularly along its southern reaches, remain working landscapes where fishing communities and local agriculture exist side by side with the natural beauty that draws visitors from across the world. This easy coexistence between everyday rural life and extraordinary coastal scenery is one of the qualities that gives Lombok its distinctive, unposed character.

The southern bays are at their most vivid in the dry season between May and October, when skies stay clear and the water reaches that particular shade of blue-green that makes scenes like this almost impossible to believe.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lombok finds a home on your wall.
