About the view

Ljubljanica River Triple Bridge

The view looks straight down the Ljubljanica River at golden hour, the sky above Ljubljana dissolving into layers of peach, rose and pale blue. Tall, slender trees press in from both embankments, their canopies catching the last warm light, while weeping branches dip toward water that glows emerald-green in the foreground and shifts to mirror-soft pinks and purples farther back. On the left bank, a rose-pink church facade rises above the rooflines, its green-capped towers framing the horizon. The Triple Bridge arches quietly across the middle distance, its elegant triple span reflecting in the still surface below. Warm cream and terracotta buildings close in on the right, adorned with cascading fuchsia blooms, and the whole scene folds into itself in the water like a second, softer version of the city.

The history & when to go

The Triple Bridge at the heart of Ljubljana is one of Central Europe's most distinctive river crossings. The central span dates to the mid-nineteenth century, and the two flanking pedestrian bridges were added between 1929 and 1932 to a design by the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, whose work shaped much of Ljubljana's modern character. The result is a unified ensemble that connects Prešeren Square on the north bank to the old town on the south, making it the city's most-used and most-celebrated meeting point.

Late spring and early summer bring the embankment flowers into full color, and the long evening light of those months turns the river exactly the luminous gold and green you see here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ljubljana finds a home on your wall.
