About the view

Dragon Bridge Green Statue

One dragon dominates the frame, its wings flung wide against a sky that has caught fire. The view looks up from bridge level, placing the verdigris figure close and commanding, its jaw open and neck arched as though the blaze of coral, crimson and violet behind it is something it summoned. Warm amber street lights are just beginning to glow in the middle distance, and a dark wooded hill rises through the last of the evening color, a pale fortress silhouette barely visible at its crown. The whole composition moves diagonally — tail low on the pale warm pedestal, wings lifting toward the upper left — giving the scene a restless, almost airborne energy that the swirling sunset sky only amplifies.

The history & when to go

Dragon Bridge was completed in 1901 and built during the period when Ljubljana was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was one of the earliest reinforced-concrete bridges in the region, and its four dragon statues became so beloved that they became Ljubljana's defining emblem. According to local tradition, the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses the bridge — a legend that locals still enjoy sharing with a knowing smile.

Sunset in late autumn or early winter, when bare branches frame the castle hill and the cold air sharpens the colors overhead, produces exactly the kind of sky captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ljubljana finds a home on your wall.
