Lapland, Finland
Part of the Europe SeriesSnowy Lapland Winter Forest
Lapland, Finland | Where the Sky Catches Fire and the Forest Holds Its Breath
Lapland is Finland's great wild north, a place where the sun refuses to set in summer and barely rises in winter, where reindeer outnumber people and the silence is so complete it feels like a presence. This is the homeland of the Sami, one of Europe's oldest indigenous peoples, who have herded, hunted, and told stories across this tundra for thousands of years. The landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons, from the golden burnish of ruska, the autumn colour season, to the deep blue twilight of kaamos, the polar night, when the aurora borealis ripples across the sky in curtains of green and violet. There is something ancient and unhurried about Finnish Lapland that few places on earth can still offer.
A watercolour palette for Lapland leans into its contrasts and its quietude. Think soft arctic white and ice-blue for the frozen lake surfaces and birch snow scenes, warmed by the amber and burnt copper of autumn fell forests. The northern lights demand an electric blue-green, while the long polar twilights blush in layered rose and lavender along the horizon, as though the sky itself is slowly exhaling.
