About the view

Emerald Bay Sunrise Waterfall

The sun crests the western ridge at the far end of Emerald Bay just as the falls come alive in the foreground, their rushing water catching the first gold and amber of dawn. The view looks out from an elevated rocky shelf, a tall warm-barked tree anchoring the right edge of the composition, its silhouette framing the scene like a doorway. White cascades spill across smooth, sun-warmed stone, picking up threads of orange and rose where the light strikes the water's surface. Beyond, the bay opens into a long silver mirror, a forested island resting quietly at its heart, and a ridge of blue-purple mountains holds the far horizon beneath a sky bleeding from deep coral into clear yellow.

The history & when to go

Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in California and is designated an underwater state park. A small island near the bay's center holds a historic stone tea house, built in the early twentieth century as part of a private Scandinavian-style estate whose ruins remain a popular destination. The surrounding land became part of a California state park in 1953, protecting the shoreline and old-growth forest from development.

The waterfall runs strongest in late spring when snowmelt is at its peak, and arriving at sunrise in those weeks means catching both the fullest cascade and the most spectacular light on the bay.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Lake Tahoe finds a home on your wall.
