About the view

Arenal Volcano Milky Way

Arenal Volcano rises as a perfect dark triangle from an open lowland plain, its symmetrical silhouette pressed against a horizon burning with deep amber and rust. Viewed from low ground across a wide field — a tall palm standing sentinel to the right — the scene belongs entirely to the night sky above. The Milky Way climbs directly from the volcano's peak in a column of violet, lavender, and cool blue-white, as though the mountain itself is exhaling the galaxy. A single bright moon hangs to the upper right, and the sky deepens from burnt orange at the horizon through magenta and plum into the vast ink-blue dark of deep space. Sparks of light scatter across the foreground grass, and the whole composition pulls the eye upward in one long, unbroken sweep.

The history & when to go

Arenal Volcano is one of the most recognized volcanoes in the Americas. For decades it was among the most consistently active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, drawing researchers and visitors from around the world. It last showed significant eruptive activity around 2010, and the region surrounding it is now protected as Arenal Volcano National Park, established in 1991 to preserve the extraordinary biodiversity and geological character of the area.

The Milky Way core is most vivid over Arenal between roughly April and October, when clearer nights and minimal light pollution combine to make the sky above the volcano truly spectacular.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of La Fortuna finds a home on your wall.
