About the view

Padar Island Aerial View

The view looks down from the highest ridge of Padar Island, where the land narrows to a dramatic spine before fanning out into a series of sweeping bays. From this elevated vantage point, the composition stretches wide across the canvas — vivid green hills rolling in waves toward the horizon, their sun-warmed slopes edged in amber and rust where the terrain drops sharply to the water below. Three distinct bays curve around the island's flanks, each holding a slightly different shade of blue: one a deep sapphire, another shifting toward turquoise where the shallows gather. A pale crescent of beach traces the middle bay, and a lone sail catches the light far out on the open water. The sky above is cloudless and bright, fading from rich cobalt at the top to a hazy pale blue at the horizon where distant islands dissolve into the heat.

The history & when to go

Padar Island sits within Komodo National Park, which was established in 1980 and later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park spans a group of islands between the larger islands of Sumbawa and Flores, and Padar is among the most visited within it. The iconic ridgeline view has become one of the most recognized landscapes in Indonesia, drawing hikers who make the steep climb at dawn to watch the light spread across the bays below.

Early morning is widely considered the best time to make the climb, when the air is cooler and the low sun casts long shadows across the ridges.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Komodo Island finds a home on your wall.
