About the view

Key West Lighthouse

The Key West Lighthouse rises slim and white against a deep afternoon blue, its tower catching full sun while the canopy of broad, spreading trees around it glows in shades of gold and deep green. The view is taken from street level, looking up along a quiet lane bordered by a white picket fence, with low white buildings tucked among the foliage on either side. A tall palm fans out in warm amber tones to the left, and loose clouds drift across the upper right of the composition. The light is generous and directional — the kind that turns every surface it touches into something luminous — and the whole scene holds that particular stillness of a tropical afternoon at its most golden.

The history & when to go

The Key West Lighthouse has guided mariners through the surrounding reef-threaded waters since 1848, replacing an earlier structure that was destroyed in a hurricane. Standing around 73 feet tall, it served as an active navigational aid for well over a century before being decommissioned. The keeper's quarters beside it have been preserved and now operate as a museum, housing artifacts that trace the long history of lighthouse life on the island.

Winter and early spring bring the clearest skies and the most comfortable temperatures for walking this neighborhood, and the low afternoon sun angles in perfectly to light the tower just as it appears here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Key West finds a home on your wall.
