Dragon Tiger Pagodas at Dusk
Two tiered towers rise from the still surface of Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung, their layered rooflines stacked toward a sky dissolving from deep amber at the horizon into soft violet and pale blue above. The scene is caught at that precise moment between day and night when the pagodas' warm golden and crimson lantern glow begins to outshine the last of the sunset. Every tier, every upturned eave, doubles itself perfectly in the water below, so the composition reads almost symmetrically — fire above, fire below, with a band of molten orange sky stitched between. A cluster of small boats rests along the left bank, their cool blues anchoring the foreground against all that warmth.
The history & when to go
The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas were completed in 1976 and stand as one of Taiwan's most recognized religious landmarks. Dedicated to Daoist tradition, the complex draws visitors who enter through the dragon's open mouth and exit through the tiger's, a ritual said to transform bad fortune into good. The pagodas form part of a broader lakeside temple complex that has served the local community for decades as a place of worship and gathering.
The view is most vivid in the cooler months between October and February, when the air is clear, the lake is calm, and the sunset arrives early enough to linger over.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Kaohsiung finds a home on your wall.
