About the view

Emirgan Park Tulip Gardens

Broad ribbons of red, coral, and white tulips sweep forward from the bottom of the canvas in curving bands that pull the eye naturally toward the water. A gently winding path traces the edge of the planting, flanked by slender trees just breaking into fresh spring green, their pale new leaves catching the soft midday light. Beyond the gardens, the Bosphorus opens up in a wash of vivid blue, a single white sailboat drifting unhurried across the strait, while wooded hills roll along the opposite shore beneath a high, cloud-scattered sky. The palette moves from warm crimson at your feet to cool aquamarine in the distance, and the whole composition breathes with the particular brightness of an April morning.

The history & when to go

Emirgan Park has been a celebrated green space in Istanbul for well over a century, with roots as a private estate before it was opened to the public. It is the centerpiece of the city's annual Tulip Festival, held each April, during which millions of blooms are planted across its terraced lawns and gardens. The festival reflects a deep cultural tradition: the tulip was prized and extensively cultivated in Ottoman court culture long before it became associated with the Netherlands.

April is the ideal time to visit Emirgan Park in person, when the tulips are at their peak and the Bosphorus light is clear and golden in the mornings.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Istanbul finds a home on your wall.
