About the view

Colonial Mansion Courtyard

A symmetrical facade of warm amber and ochre rises from a forecourt dappled in soft, diffused light. Seen head-on from courtyard level, the Colonial Mansion Courtyard in Ho Chi Minh City fills the frame with its grand central entrance, arched upper windows, and a crowning circular detail that anchors the roofline. Trailing vines of deep green spill down the lower storey, softening every column and sill, while broad-canopied trees push in from both sides, their branches reaching across a pale, cloud-washed sky. The ground is washed in rosy lavender tones, and the overall palette — burnt gold, forest green, dusty rose — gives the whole scene a humid, late-afternoon warmth that feels entirely alive.

The history & when to go

Colonial-era architecture of this kind arrived in Vietnam during the French colonial period, which shaped much of the city's built environment from the mid-nineteenth century through the first half of the twentieth. Grand residences and civic buildings constructed during this era blended European structural forms with local tropical conditions, resulting in wide verandas, louvred shutters, and lush planted grounds designed to manage heat and light. Many such properties have since served multiple purposes across successive periods of Vietnamese history, making them layered witnesses to the country's transformation.

The courtyard rewards an early-morning visit, when golden light warms the facade before the heat of the day takes hold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ho Chi Minh City finds a home on your wall.
