About the view

Grindelwald Alpine Meadow Storm

A storm is rolling in fast, and for one suspended moment the valley floor catches the last of the escaping light. In the foreground, a wide alpine meadow carpets itself in pale white and soft lavender blooms, their small heads close to the grass as though bracing for what comes next. Beyond them, a narrow band of brilliant gold cuts across the middle distance where a break in the clouds lets a final shaft of late sun fall on the green. Then the mountain rises — dark, massive, streaked with patches of snow and wrapped in churning indigo cloud, its jagged upper ridges half-swallowed by the approaching storm. The composition pulls the eye from quiet softness at the base straight up into something turbulent and enormous above.

The history & when to go

The area around Grindelwald has been a destination for climbers, artists and travelers since the eighteenth century, when the opening of railway access through the Bernese Oberland brought the high Alps within reach of a wider world. The surrounding peaks became legendary among European mountaineers, and the valley's combination of accessible meadows and dramatic vertical terrain made it one of the most celebrated alpine landscapes in Europe.

Late spring, when snowmelt feeds the meadows and early blooms push through the still-cold grass, is when this exact collision of colour and stormy sky is most likely to greet you in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Grindelwald finds a home on your wall.
