About the view

Colorful Hillside Village Street

A narrow street tumbles downhill through the heart of Gràcia, Barcelona, caught in the full blaze of midday sun. Warm amber and burnt orange walls press close on either side, their surfaces alive with shadow and light, while leafy branches reach in from the left to soften the scene. The lane draws the eye deep into the distance, where coral and cream buildings stack up toward a hillside dense with green canopy. Splashes of red on shutters and balconies punctuate the palette, and the pale blue of sky peeks in at the very top, keeping the whole composition from tipping into shadow.

The history & when to go

Gràcia was its own independent municipality until the late nineteenth century, when it was formally absorbed into Barcelona. That history of self-governance shaped a neighborhood with a fiercely local identity, expressed every August during the Festa Major de Gràcia, one of the city's most celebrated street festivals, when residents transform entire lanes with elaborate handmade decorations. The area's sloping streets and close-packed housing reflect an older way of building suited to the terrain, giving the neighborhood a density and intimacy rarely found elsewhere in the city.

The light on these streets is at its richest in late morning, when the sun angles low enough to throw the warm facades into sharp relief without washing out their color.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Gracia finds a home on your wall.
