About the view

Gordes Hilltop Village Skyline

The view opens from a neighbouring hillside, where a silvery-leafed tree frames the right edge of the composition and low vegetation sweeps across the foreground in strokes of yellow-green. From there the eye travels upward to Gordes, its warm-amber buildings stacked tightly against a rocky outcrop that rises in tiers toward a broad-shouldered church at the very crown. Slender dark trees punctuate the slopes like exclamation marks, and the whole village glows in the long amber light of late afternoon, every façade burnished to the colour of honey. The sky above is a soft wash of peach and pale lilac, the distant hills dissolving into blue haze behind the village silhouette.

The history & when to go

Gordes has been classified among the most beautiful villages in France, a designation it holds alongside its long history as a settlement shaped by medieval lords, Renaissance nobles, and waves of artists who arrived in the twentieth century drawn by the quality of the Provençal light. The village château was rebuilt in its current Renaissance form in the sixteenth century and still anchors the centre of the town. During the Second World War Gordes served as a centre of local Resistance activity, a chapter the community continues to remember with quiet pride.

The golden hour before sunset, when the low sun strikes the warm stone faces of the buildings most directly, is the moment this view is at its most luminous — worth timing a visit around if you can.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Gordes finds a home on your wall.
