About the view

Pink Beach Komodo Flores

The view sweeps in from high above, looking down along a ridge of densely rounded hills that roll in deep, shadowed greens toward the sea. Pink Beach on Komodo stretches below like a pale blush ribbon caught between two arms of land, its rosy shoreline meeting water that shifts from milky turquoise close to shore into a deeper, vivid teal farther out. Small boats rest at anchor in the open bay, tiny white specks against the blue, while distant islands sit low on the horizon under a wide, softly lit sky of pale cerulean and drifting cloud. The composition draws the eye downward through the V of the hills and then outward across the open water, giving the scene a sense of both drama and vast calm.

The history & when to go

Pink Beach is one of only a handful of beaches in the world where the sand carries a distinctly rosy tone, a characteristic recognized within Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established to protect the remarkable marine and terrestrial ecosystems of this part of eastern Indonesia. The national park encompasses a group of islands including Komodo and Rinca, and is home to the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard. The surrounding waters are considered among the most biodiverse marine environments on earth.

The view is at its most vivid in the dry season, roughly April through October, when the light over the Flores Sea is clear and generous from morning onward.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Flores finds a home on your wall.
