About the view

Lago Argentino Floating Iceberg

A lone iceberg drifts at the center of Lago Argentino, its fractured bulk glowing an almost impossible electric blue against the pale, cloud-filtered sky. The view is taken from the shoreline, looking out across still, glacier-fed water in shades of seafoam and soft teal. Wind-bent trees frame the left edge, their dark branches reaching inward, while a bare, skeletal trunk to the right adds a quiet counterpoint. Behind the ice, a steep mountain flank drops sharply into the mist, its dark slope deepening the contrast with all that luminous blue. Smaller fragments of ice scatter around the main berg, breaking the smooth surface into a quiet, floating composition of white and cold light.

The history & when to go

Lago Argentino is the largest freshwater lake in Argentina and one of the largest in South America. It lies within Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1981, and is fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field — one of the largest expanses of ice outside the polar regions. Glaciers that terminate at the lake's edge calve constantly, releasing icebergs that drift across its surface. The intense blue color of glacial ice results from centuries of compression forcing out air bubbles, causing the ice to absorb longer wavelengths of light and reflect vivid blue.

The shoreline views of floating ice are most dramatic in the Southern Hemisphere summer, from November through February, when longer days and clearer light bring out the full range of blues in the ice and water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of El Calafate finds a home on your wall.
