About the view

Cave Point County Park

The view opens low and close to the shore, looking along the jagged edge of Cave Point County Park where flat, layered rock shelves step down into the water. The foreground is all cool grey and pale gold stone, worn smooth and stacked in horizontal bands that carry the eye toward the lake. Where the rock meets the water, the color shifts from clear green to deep turquoise, waves breaking white against a dark headland crowned with tall, dense evergreens. The trees press together above the cliffs in deep bottle-green, a few bare trunks catching the bright midday light among them. Out past the point, Lake Michigan opens wide under a nearly cloudless sky, the water shifting from jade near shore to a rich, open blue at the horizon. Two small clouds drift far to the right. The whole scene hums with the particular clarity of a calm, sunny day on freshwater.

The history & when to go

Cave Point County Park is one of the most celebrated natural sites in Wisconsin. The shoreline here is shaped by Lake Michigan acting against layered rock over an enormous span of time, producing caves and cliffs that are audible as much as visible when the lake is rough. The park is part of the Door Peninsula, which separates Green Bay from Lake Michigan, and it sits along the county's eastern shore.

Late spring and early summer tend to bring the clearest water and the most vivid greens, making the shoreline color especially striking for anyone visiting in person.

Layered limestone shelves drop into water so clear and turquoise it reads more Caribbean than Great Lakes, edged by dark cedars standing sentinel above the surge. This watercolor print of Cave Point County Park, Door County, glows with emerald shallows, cool stone grey, and a sky of open, unhurried blue.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Door County finds a home on your wall.
