About the view

Qutb Minar Delhi Ruins

The view looks straight up the path toward the Qutb Minar, its deeply ridged warm-stone tower rising in tiers until the very tip dissolves into a sky alive with rolling mackerel clouds of blue and white. The perspective is low and wide, which makes the tower feel almost vertiginous, leaning into the composition from the left while a domed structure of the same deep amber and rust tones anchors the right side. Neatly clipped hedges line the central walkway, and the surrounding lawns glow a saturated emerald in what feels like the long, honeyed light of late morning. Tree branches reach in softly from both edges, framing the scene like a half-open window onto the complex in Delhi.

The history & when to go

The Qutb Minar was begun in 1199 and is one of the tallest towers of its era anywhere in the world, standing at 72.5 metres. It was built under the first rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and expanded by subsequent sultans over the following decades. The surrounding complex grew across generations and contains some of the earliest surviving examples of Islamic architecture on the Indian subcontinent. The entire site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

October through February brings cooler temperatures and clear skies to Delhi, making the grounds comfortable to explore at a leisurely pace.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Delhi finds a home on your wall.
