About the view

Dades Gorge Canyon River

The view looks straight into the heart of Dades Gorge, standing at canyon floor level where the walls close in on either side and draw the eye deep toward a sliver of open sky. On the right, the upper cliff face blazes in full amber and gold where direct sun strikes the warm stone, while the left wall recedes into cooler rose and mauve shadow. Between them, a shallow river runs in luminous turquoise and cobalt over pale rounded rocks, catching one narrow ribbon of amber reflection near the center. Low, broad-leafed desert plants cluster along the banks in muted teal and sage, small but vivid against the pale riverbed, anchoring the composition before the canyon narrows to a dark, cool vanishing point.

The history & when to go

Dades Gorge follows the course of the Dades River through the Jebel Saghro and High Atlas foothills of southern Morocco. The gorge has long served as part of the historic route connecting the Saharan south to the imperial cities of the north, and the valley surrounding it has been inhabited for centuries, with ancient kasbahs still visible along its upper reaches. The dramatic erosion that shaped its towering walls has made it one of Morocco's most recognized natural landmarks.

The contrast between sun-drenched upper walls and the cool shadowed floor is most vivid in the spring and autumn, when the light strikes at an angle sharp enough to set the canyon ablaze.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dades Gorge finds a home on your wall.
