About the view

Cook Islands Rocky Sunset Shore

The view stretches westward from a jagged shoreline, looking out across open water as the sun drops to the horizon in Cook Islands. Dark, wave-smoothed rocks crowd the foreground, their rough silhouettes anchored in shallow surf that picks up the glow of the dying light. A single bold sea stack rises from the water just off center, its dark form perfectly placed against a sky that has erupted into coral, amber and deep gold. Above, clouds billow and roll in shades of peach and violet, thinning toward a stretch of clear lavender blue near the left edge of the composition. The sun itself glows like a coal just above the waterline, and its reflection spills across the surface in a long shimmer of orange and rose.

The history & when to go

The Cook Islands have been home to Polynesian communities for well over a thousand years, with navigators settling across the archipelago's fifteen islands long before European contact. The islands became associated with New Zealand in the early twentieth century and today govern themselves in free association with it. Their volcanic coasts, shaped by ancient eruptions and worn by centuries of surf, form some of the most dramatic shoreline scenery in the South Pacific.

The western shore offers this kind of sunset throughout the year, though the dry season between April and November tends to bring clearer skies and the most vivid evening color.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cook Islands finds a home on your wall.
