About the view

Misty Cathedral Plaza Scene

A white-walled cathedral rises through cool morning mist in Cobán, its twin towers capped with deep burgundy domes that glow against a sky of layered blue-grey. The view opens from across the broad plaza, where dozens of figures move through the haze — small silhouettes wrapped in dark textiles, their presence giving the scene both scale and quiet life. Behind the cathedral, dense forested hills dissolve into cloud, their deep teal greens bleeding softly into the pale atmosphere above. The palette is cool and hushed: chalky whites, slate blues, and those two vivid domes pulling the eye forward through the mist.

The history & when to go

The cathedral facing Cobán's central plaza has long anchored daily life in Alta Verapaz. The region was colonized in the sixteenth century largely through the efforts of Dominican missionaries, and the church became a focal point of the community that grew around it. The plaza it faces has for generations served as a gathering place for the Q'eqchi' Maya population, who make up a significant part of the city's identity. Markets, festivals, and ordinary mornings alike unfold in this shared space.

Early mornings are when the cloud forest mist hangs lowest over the plaza, wrapping the cathedral in exactly this quiet, luminous atmosphere — the scene at its most atmospheric before the day fully opens.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cobán finds a home on your wall.
