About the view

Carmel Beach Wildflower Cove

The view opens from a wildflower-covered bluff above Carmel Beach, looking out across a crescent of pale white sand toward water that shifts from bright turquoise near the shore to a soft blue-grey at the horizon. Tall spikes of purple blooms crowd the foreground alongside bursts of golden yellow flowers, their colors almost electric against the rich green of the coastal scrub. Warm morning light catches the hillside to the left, where cottage rooftops peer through the canopy of tall, wind-shaped trees, and dark sea rocks punctuate the water's edge before the coastline curves away into a hazy headland. The sky is pale and luminous, that particular California coastal soft-white that makes every other color in the scene seem more alive.

The history & when to go

Carmel Beach has drawn artists, writers and wanderers since the early twentieth century, when a community of creative people settled the village specifically for this quality of light and landscape. The beach itself stretches for roughly a mile along Carmel Bay and sits at the foot of Ocean Avenue, the village's main street. It has long been one of the most celebrated stretches of shoreline on the California coast, known for its unusually fine, white sand and the surrounding bluffs that bloom with wildflowers through the spring months.

The wildflowers typically peak between March and May, when the bluffs above the beach are at their most vivid and the morning light is still soft enough to make the water glow.
