About the view

Lion's Head Mountain Coast

The view sweeps along the Atlantic shore toward Lion's Head, the sharp peak rising alone above Cape Town's coastline with quiet authority. The vantage point sits slightly elevated among warm boulders tumbled along the foreshore, looking northwest where the sea curves into a sheltered crescent of pale sand. Tall palms and dense coastal scrub lean into the right of the frame in golds and deep greens, their warmth contrasting with the vivid turquoise of the water below. White foam traces the boulder line where gentle swells meet the shore, and a single soft cloud drifts above the summit against a sky of brilliant, open blue. The light feels mid-morning and unhurried, the kind that turns every surface golden and every shadow crisp.

The history & when to go

Lion's Head sits within the Table Mountain National Park, a protected area that stretches along the Cape Peninsula. The peak has long been a landmark for sailors navigating the Cape sea route, and its distinctive pointed silhouette made it easy to identify from a distance at sea. Today it is one of the most recognized natural features along the Atlantic Seaboard, and the circular trail that winds around and up to its summit draws visitors from around the world.

The view along this stretch of coast is at its finest in the Cape summer months, from November through February, when the long daylight hours keep the light warm well into the afternoon.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cape Town finds a home on your wall.
