About the view

Haystack Rock Tidal Pools

The view is taken from low on the beach at dusk, looking out across a wide expanse of wet sand where the retreating tide has left dozens of shallow pools scattered across rippled flats. Each pool mirrors the sky above — soft blush, peach, and fading coral bleeding into deep blue at the horizon — so the foreground feels almost as luminous as the heavens. At the center of the composition, Haystack Rock rises as a bold dark silhouette against the afterglow, its massive, blocky form flanked by smaller sea stacks that echo its shape in the middle distance. The whole scene is held together by that tension between stillness and vastness: intimate pools at your feet, an enormous sky pressing down from above.

The history & when to go

Haystack Rock is one of the most recognized natural landmarks on the Pacific coast of the United States. Standing 235 feet tall, it sits directly on the beach at Cannon Beach and is accessible on foot at low tide, when the exposed reef around its base draws visitors and wildlife alike. The rock is protected as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, meaning the surrounding habitat is carefully managed.

The tidal pools are richest and most dramatic at a very low tide.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cannon Beach finds a home on your wall.
