About the view

Szechenyi Thermal Bath Pools

The view looks out from poolside at Széchenyi Thermal Bath, low and close to the water, so that the turquoise thermal pools fill the entire foreground. It is early morning in winter, and the heat rising from the water has turned the air into rolling white mist that drifts across the surface and softens everything behind it. Through the vapor, the warm amber façade of the bath complex emerges in layers — arched windows glowing gold, and above them a row of teal-capped domes rising symmetrically against a pale sky washed in soft peach and blue. Flanking the nearest pool, warm-toned balustrades carry sculpted figures that anchor the composition on both sides, drawing the eye inward toward the dissolving architecture beyond. The color palette moves from aqua at the base to amber in the middle distance to the faintest blush at the horizon.

The history & when to go

Széchenyi Thermal Bath opened in Budapest in 1913, making it one of the oldest and largest thermal bath complexes in Europe. It was built above a natural hot spring discovered in the late nineteenth century and features water that reaches temperatures of around 77 degrees Celsius at the source. The Neo-Baroque complex has remained in continuous use and is considered one of the defining landmarks of the city.

Winter mornings, just after the baths open at seven, offer the most dramatic views — the cold air intensifies the steam and the early light turns the façade that unmistakable shade of gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Budapest finds a home on your wall.
