About the view

Santa Elena Canyon Rio Grande

Towering warm-stone walls rise on both sides of the Rio Grande, their burnished amber and ochre faces catching full desert sun on the right while the left flank falls into cooler shadow, the contrast making the canyon feel at once vast and close. A narrow ribbon of olive-green water threads between them, its still surface mirroring the golden cliffs above. At the center of the scene, a lone red kayak drifts quietly downstream through Santa Elena Canyon, tiny against the immensity of everything around it — a vivid point of crimson that draws the eye and holds it. A sliver of clear blue sky appears at the top of the frame, and a few green shrubs press against the rocks at the water's edge, softening the hard geometry of stone and river.

The history & when to go

Santa Elena Canyon was carved by the Rio Grande over millions of years and marks the international boundary between the United States and Mexico, with Texas on one side and the state of Chihuahua on the other. The canyon walls reach roughly 1,500 feet at their highest point, making it one of the most dramatic river canyons in North America. It has been part of Big Bend National Park since the park's establishment in 1944.

Late afternoon light catches the canyon mouth in warm gold, turning those already-golden walls into something closer to molten copper.
