About the view

Lake Nahuel Huapi Kayaker

A lone kayaker cuts a slow, silent line across Lake Nahuel Huapi, the yellow hull vivid against the deep green water. The view is taken from lake level, looking toward a dense wall of tall trees that run the full width of the canvas — deep forest green punctuated by bursts of amber and gold where autumn has taken hold. Above the treeline, jagged pale peaks push into a soft blue-grey sky. The stillness of the water is the quiet centre of the whole composition: every tree, every golden crown, every ridge is mirrored below with startling clarity, so that the figure in red seems to paddle through two worlds at once. Cool silver light from the sky settles over the upper half of the scene while the lower half glows with the warm reflection of the autumn canopy.

The history & when to go

Lake Nahuel Huapi sits within Nahuel Huapi National Park, Argentina's first national park, established in 1934 after naturalist Francisco Moreno donated land to the state for that purpose. The lake itself stretches across roughly 530 square kilometres, threading between peninsulas and islands, and its waters drain eastward into the Atlantic via the Limay River system. Kayaking its sheltered bays has become one of the most celebrated ways to experience the landscape at close range.

Autumn — roughly April and May in the Southern Hemisphere — brings the most dramatic colour to the shoreline forests, and calm mornings offer the mirror-flat reflections that make a scene like this possible.

Carry Andean Serenity Home Daily – Lake Nahuel Huapi Kayaker Bariloche · Gallery Canvas

A lone kayaker drifts across the mirror-still surface of Lake Nahuel Huapi, the Andes rising silver and sharp beyond a blaze of autumn larches. This watercolor study of Bariloche captures the lake's glassy greens and amber forest golds in a mood of absolute, breathless calm.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bariloche finds a home on your wall.
