About the view

Texas State Capitol Building

The view draws you straight down the long central approach, the Texas State Capitol rising at the end of the path like a landmark pulled from a golden hour dream. The dome catches the last warm light of the day, glowing in deep amber and soft rose against a sky that fades from peach to pale blush at the horizon. Broad lawns stretch out on either side, their deep greens deepened further by the shade of wide canopies overhead, branches reaching into the upper corners of the composition and framing the scene with a natural arch. Behind the building, Austin's downtown skyline dissolves softly into the haze, holding its distance, letting the Capitol hold the moment entirely.

The history & when to go

Completed in 1888, the Texas State Capitol in Austin is one of the largest capitol buildings in the United States, rising taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It has served as the seat of Texas state government since its opening and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The building underwent an extensive restoration and underground expansion in the 1990s, preserving its historic character while modernizing its function. It remains one of the most visited sites in the state.

Golden hour on a clear evening is when this view earns its full warmth, the dome lit from the west and the long lawn glowing green beneath it.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Austin finds a home on your wall.
