About the view

Maroon Bells Lake Reflection

The twin summits of the Maroon Bells rise in deep burgundy and dusty rose above a still alpine lake, their snow-dusted crowns catching the last fire of a sunset sky. Seen from the lake's southern shore, the composition draws the eye straight up a corridor of warm-toned slopes blazing in autumn gold and amber, dark evergreen stands anchoring the valley floor on either side. The sky above churns with soft violet and pink, and every element — peak, slope, treeline, cloud — is pulled downward into the mirror-calm water below, doubling the scene in cool, jewel-like reflections. The palette moves from the deep maroon of the peaks through molten orange hillsides to the hushed lavender of the upper atmosphere, held together by the glassy surface at center.

The history & when to go

Maroon Bells are two peaks — Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak — both exceeding 14,000 feet, located within the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness in White River National Forest. The wilderness area was established in 1964 under the Wilderness Act. The lake in the foreground, Maroon Lake, sits at roughly 9,600 feet and is reached by a short trail from the trailhead at the road's end.

The autumn color typically peaks in late September, when the hillsides turn gold almost overnight and early morning light hits the peaks before the breeze disturbs the lake's surface.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Aspen finds a home on your wall.
