About the view

Ancient Lycian Rock Tombs

The view looks straight up into the face of a towering warm-stone cliff, where the Ancient Lycian Rock Tombs emerge from the rock as though the mountain itself grew architectural facades. Columned doorways, pediments and shadowed chambers are stacked at different heights, each one fitted naturally into the contours of the bluff. Tufts of wild green growth push out from crevices between the carvings, softening the ancient geometry with splashes of deep emerald and gold. Strong midday light catches the upper surfaces in amber and honey tones, while the lower recesses settle into cool shadow. A vivid strip of Antalya's cobalt sky anchors the top of the composition, making the warm rock glow all the brighter against it.

The history & when to go

The Lycians were an ancient Anatolian people whose civilization reached its height between roughly the fifth and second centuries BCE. Across the region they called Lycia, they carved elaborate tombs directly into cliff faces, believing elevation brought the deceased closer to the divine. The facades were often designed to mimic the fronts of wooden dwellings, a reflection of Lycian domestic architecture translated permanently into rock. The tombs at various sites throughout the region are among the most distinctive funerary monuments surviving from the ancient world.
